 Walter Lee Benson, Sr., 66, Ret. USAF T/Sgt. of Mobile, passed away on January 19, 2014 at his home.  Walter graduated from Murphy High School and went on to the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.  He retired after twenty years in the US Air Force spending four of those years with Det.3 at Templehof Air Force Base behind the Iron Curtain in Berlin, Germany.  He also worked at and retired from the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital where he was a biotechnician and affectionately known by his friends as the “Huggin-nater”. He also enjoyed donating his time and talent as an actor/playwrite for the Mobile Mystery Dinners group in Mobile for whom he wrote their signature play, “1863 Murder at the Mansion” and was a former member of the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Group, Descendants of the Mayflower Society and the Descendants of Charlemagne.  Predeceasing him in death are his parents, Jimmie J. Benson and Myrle Gynel Mayson Benson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jacqueline “Mur”  Phillips Benson; his daughter, Leah Benson Maddox and his son, USAF S/SGT Walter Lee (Jennifer Erin) Benson, Jr.; his sister, Susan Benson (Don) Sollie and his brother, Mickey Norman Benson; his uncle, Walter L. (Shirley) Mayson, Jr. and his aunt, Alice Mayson Schablinski; brothers in law, Robert S. Phillips and Richard B. (Deborah) Phillips; five granddaughters and one great-granddaughter; two very special cousins, Pat Pritchard and Deborah Bass-Frazier; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held  on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 2:30 p.m at the Alabama State Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery on Hwy 225 in Spanish Fort.   Expressions of condolence may be made at hughesfh.com.  Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL, 36526.

    Walt was such a fine person. I knew Walt as a fun, loving, humorus, dedicated, interesting, talented, intelligent, patriotic, charming man, and fellow employee at USACW hospital. I believe he brought a lot of good into the world. He was a good person to know. I’m sure he’ll be missed by many.
