June 7, 1923 – June 1, 2015
Vernon Hurst Head, age 91, of Fairhope, AL, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015. He was born on June 7, 1923, in Kansas City, MO of Guy Vernon Head and Mabel Hurst Head and lived his early years in Columbia, MO where his father was Professor of Law at the University of Missouri. He is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Roberts Head and predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Richey Head.
After earning his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Harvard University in Engineering Sciences and Applied Physics and further studies at the University of Missouri, Head settled in Fairhope and taught physics at Springhill College, Mobile, for 35 years.
He was a talented musician playing the violin and viola in many different symphony orchestras and chamber music groups. As an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, he was a lay reader and performed with the choir and at weddings.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebekah (Graham) Holmes; son, Thad (Tonidell) Early; stepdaughter, Lauren (Paul) Baker; stepson, Garriff (Anne-Clinton) Roberts and stepdaughter, Siobhan Gonzalez; grandchildren, Eric and Emily Holmes, Garrett (Allie) Rosen and Maren (Adam) Loftin, McClean and Aisling Gonzalez, Anders Rosen and Carolina Groom.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, June 8, 2015 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 28788 N. Main St, Daphne, AL 36526. Rev. Thack Dyson officiating. The family will welcome friends at 10:00am before the service in Malone Hall. A private graveside service will follow at Montrose Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Building Fund. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.hughesfh.com.
