Joseph Phillip Wendling, a native of Eufaula, Alabama and resident of Mobile for the past 60 years, passed away May 14, 2012 after a brief illness. At 88 he was the last surviving child of Matthew and Estella Gengler Wendling.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Madeline Nash Wendling; sisters Dodie W. Hayes and Toni W. Nash; brothers Al, Lou and Matt Wendling; niece, Antoinette Irene Wendling; nephews, Anthony ‘Little Tony’ (Nancy) Wendling, G. Bert (Helen) Ward, Jr, John Joseph Nash, Jr, and Rolf ‘Sam’ (Carol) Whatley.
Survived by nieces and nephews, Arie, Marie, Tricia, Dan, Neil and Matt Hayes; Connie, Kathy, Sandra, Dickie, Jim and Matt Wendling; Alida, Monica and Mark Wendling; Peggy Wendling and Toni’s grandchildren, Christina and John Joseph Nash.
Also survived by Nash family nieces, Sharon W. (Don, deceased) Henderson, Pat H. (Tom) Mason, Maxine N. (Dave) Tyson and Cheryl N. (Britt) Meacham and devoted nephew, Harold (Donna) Burns.
He will be missed by family, close friends and neighbors, especially Sister Magdalena Langlois, Mrs. Mattei, his ‘pew buddy’ and the 8:00 am parishioners at Little Flower Catholic Church, Terrell Brewer, Tommy Clark, Jack Fresland, Ashley & Rebecca Guy, Phillip & Belinda Holley, Susan Westerman and most especially his Hollinger Drive buddies, who every day, for seven years, showered ‘Smooth’ with attention and affection. His family will always be grateful for their kindness which brought a lot of happiness to ‘Uncle’ Joe during his last years.
He was a WWII veteran, having served six years in the Navy as a Signalman second class. He retired from Southern Bell (AT&T) in 1982 after 32 years of service.
An 11:00 am Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 16th at Little Flower Catholic Church on Government Street. The family will receive guests beginning at 10:30 am followed by private burial at Magnolia Cemetery.
