Jerry Darrell Black, 66, of Chatom, Alabama, passed away on March 13, 2014, at Springhill Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family and many friends.  Born in Millry, Alabama on February 27, 1948, the son of Edward Black and Ora Taylor Black and the brother of four siblings, all of whom have preceded him in death. Jerry was married to Naomi Phillips on August 31, 1967.  He graduated from Millry High School and was later employed by Ciba-Geigy for 38 years.  At the time of his death, he was retired.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Naomi and their three children, Chase Marlon Black, Jerry Grant Black, and Marsha Black Parnell.  Jerry was the grandfather to four grandchildren, Hannah Black Lewis, Alexander Grant Black, Ainsley Madison Parnell, and Caleb Emory Parnell and the uncle of many nephews and nieces and a friend to everyone he met.

Remembering and celebrating the life of Jerry Black, a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Millry Baptist Church in Millry, Alabama.  Rev. Sammy Taylor, a longtime friend of Jerry’s, will be officiating.  There will not be a visitation or burial.  An afternoon luncheon for family and friends will be provided by Jerry’s home church, Chatom Church of God, immediately following the service in the fellowship hall at Millry Baptist Church.

Jerry was very tenderhearted toward his children and grandchildren and all children for that matter and would have wanted his name to continue by expressing care for those who have never known the love of a father.  Memorial Donations may be made to Hearts for Haiti mission team,  a local mission group who provide life-sustaining resources and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to orphaned boys and girls in Leogane, Haiti,  or to the Chatom Church of God Building Fund, in order that the Gospel may continue to be shared locally and around the world.  Those donations may be given to his immediate family members at the  service on Sunday, the luncheon, or mailed to Naomi Black at P.O. Box 1131, Chatom, Alabama, 36518.

Our family would like to thank you for the wonderful expressions of love and support we have experienced during this time of grief and loss. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.hughesfh.com.  Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home and Crematory, 7951 American Way, Daphne, AL  36526.

To Dear Naomi and the Black Family,
Having met you just once, at our godson, Ross, and your granddaughter, Hannah’s, wedding, I want you to know that you made quite a lasting impression. Your sorrow is also ours, and our heartfelt prayers shall continue for you and your family. We may be separated by many miles, but in this time of loss, know that our arms are wrapped around you in love.
