Monroeville, AL

Charles Ira Barnes was born on July 27, 1931 to Ira and Minnie Boyd Barnes in Steelville, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Barnes; sister, Betty Blechle; his parents and by his wife, Doris Neihaus Barnes.

Charlie is survived by his sister, Francis Duvardo of Highpoint, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Pauline Neihaus of Mountain View, Missouri; a host of nieces and nephews; his Godson, Will Marriott and his parents, Deborah and Blanchard Marriott and many others who loved him dearly.

Charlie retired from the U.S. Air Force as a technical flight instructor in 1975 and moved to Monroeville where he worked at the Monroeville Airport and later worked as a mail window clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Monroeville retiring in 1998.

Charlie and Doris were devoted to each other for 52 years until her death in January 2012. They were red white and blue through and through. They traveled the United States attending the 603rd Air Force Squadron’s annual reunions. Charlie and Doris’ Godson, Will, dearly loved his ‘meme and papa’. Love, joy and kindness were characteristics that describe Charlie’s life and everyone fortunate enough to know Charlie and Doris felt love and were blessed.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Monroeville at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 21, 2013 officiated by Reverend Sara Shaver. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to W. F. Green Veterans Home, 300 Faulkner Drive, Bay Minette, AL 36507 or to the church at 324 Pineville Road, Monroeville, AL 36460.
